As
a huge Seanan McGuire fan, and a lover of the InCryptid series,
it's only fair that I warn you there may be some gushing here.
Pocket Apocalypse is the second visit with Alexander
Price, the slightly nerdy member of the butt-kicking Price
family. Alexander's love, Shelby, asks him for a huge favor.
It seems Australia is having a werewolf problem, and since
the Price family are experts on that particular boogey monster,
she wants him to come home with her and help out. Unfortunately,
she seems to be the ONLY person in Australia who wants Alexander
there. The mix of "we hate all of Shelby's boyfriends"
and "how dare you think we can't solve our own problems"
leads to much of the trouble in the book, and much of the
wry humor. The humans were as much of a problem as the werewolves,
and very believably so. I also loved the idea of lycanthropy
as a kind of rabies - especially with it being contagious
to any kind of mammal. The creation of werewolf horses and
sheep was far more horrific than you'd expect. Scary, moving,
and totally compelling - this one's a keeper from beginning
to end.
