Jessica is on the island of Maui lecturing at Maui College on community involvement in police investigations. A subject she knows all too well. Her partner on this lecture is legendary retired detective Mike Kane. He is a large man who shares his love of Hawaiian lore and history with Jessica.

Unfortunately all stops when the body of Mala Kapul is found at the rocky base of a cliff.

Jessica's friend and colleague Mala Kapul was a botanist and popular professor at the school. She was known for her activism and efforts on behalf of the volcanic crater Haleakala. The crater is already home to an observatory but now there are plans to build the world's largest solar telescope there as well. Mala argued fiercely to preserve the delicate ecology of the area. The locals were split on the issue. Was someone trying to quiet the protesters or was Mala's killer making a more personal statement?

It's up to Jessica and Mike to uncover who was driven to silence the scientist… and betray the true meaning of "aloha."

Jessica decides to make a trip up the volcano Haleakala. To ride up and then bicycle down to take her mind off of the terrible murder. As she's riding her bicycle a man who left about the same time starts to close the gap between them. All of the sudden he begins crowding her over to the edge of the cliff. Finally, he gives one last push with his hand and speeds ahead. This leaves Jessica headed for a thousand-foot drop into oblivion.

Once again Jessica and Donald have a hit. I always enjoy this series. It's just like watching the TV series all over again. I always appreciate the way it is written in the first person. It makes it so much more personal that way. I can almost hear Jessica's voice reading the words as I go over each page. I know you will too. This is another great mystery. See if you can figure out who done it before you finish the book.
